Congressman Engel Calls on Supreme Court to Recognize Full Marriage Equality

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Eliot Engel (NY-16) called on the Supreme Court to recognize full marriage equality this term. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court heard arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges. The court will consider whether the Constitution prohibits states from outlawing gay marriage.

"Earlier this week, the Supreme Court heard arguments on whether our nation will, at long last, recognize the equal rights and equal dignity of same-sex couples," Congressman Engel said. "Marriage equality has come a long way these past few years -- 37 states and the District of Columbia now recognize the freedom to marry -- but many states are stubbornly refusing to recognize and honor the enduring commitments of same-sex couples. Now, the Supreme Court has the opportunity to recognize what the Constitution says in plain English -- that every American, no matter who they are or who they love, is entitled to the equal protection of the law.

"It is time for nationwide marriage equality. From my first years in Congress, voting against the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996, I have fought to protect equal rights and protections for LGBT Americans. It is my hope that the Supreme Court will take this opportunity to uphold the Constitutional protections promised to LGBT Americans, and that we will be able to take this important national step forward in the struggle for civil rights."

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Obergefell case on Tuesday. The Court is expected to hand down its decision this summer.
